Reports suggest that Villa is close to joining City’s Premier League rivals, Tottenham Hotspur.
Manchester City are preparing to sign Barcelona striker David Villa from right under the noses of Tottenham, Sports Direct News reports.
Reports have suggested that Spurs have been closing in on Villa for many months and the clubs new technical director, Franco Baldini, is set to make a formal approach for the striker.
However, City look set to join the race for the Spanish striker at the last minute and could easily match the strikers £100,000 a week wage demands.
Spurs are unlikely to be able to manage that and the North London club are not able to offer Villa Champions League football, a competition which Villa is very keen to play in next season.
However, reports suggest that City will see Villa as a back-up striker and the Spaniard has already said that he wants to play for a club that will offer him first team football.
The reason he wants to leave Barcelona is that he is struggling to start games for the club and Villa is desperate to be a part of Spain’s squad for next summers World Cup and if he is not playing regularly his chances of making that squad are slim.
