Fred’s club Fluminense are willing to sell the striker at a price.
Manchester City are considering signing Brazil’s in-form striker Fred as a back-up in case they fail in their attempts to sign Napoli striker Edinson Cavani, the Daily Mirror reports.
Cavani is still City’s number one target but Napoli continue to play hard ball over the Uruguayan’s asking price.
Napoli will not accept anything less than £53 million for Cavani and City are not willing to pay that amount having already signed Jesus Navas and Fernandinho this summer.
They could now make a move for Fred, who scored two goals in the Confederations Cup final between Brazil and Spain and looks set to be a part of Brazil’s starting line-up for next summers World Cup.
Although Fluminense have said that they won’t sell Fred, the player has said that he will listen to offers as long as they are serious.
City would almost treble Fred’s current wages and Fluminense would consider selling Fred if the Sky Blues submitted a bid of around £7 million, meaning Fred would be a much cheaper option than Edinson Cavani.
However, Fred is getting close to 30 and City maybe worried about spending a significant sum on player who may not be at his best for much longer.
