Sunderland Make £8.6m Bid for Italian International Midfielder as Paolo Di Canio Sets Bar High for Summer Additions

Stadium of Light side plot ambitious Turin raid.

Black Cats boss Paolo Di Canio has made an improved bid for Juventus midfielder Emanuele Giaccherini according to La Gazzetta dello Sport, increasing his initial £7m bid up to £8.6m in the hope that the Turin side consider selling the adaptable 28 year old.

Giaccherini enjoyed something of a circuitous route to the top of his profession spending seven years at minnows Cesena, via a number of loan routes, before moving to Juventus in August 2011. In his first season he helped Antonio Conte’s side to a Serie A title, making 23 domestic league starts.

His second season saw the attacking midfielder, who is used commonly in a wide role, play a limited role in first team affairs, starting less than half of La Vecchia Signora’s Serie A matches. This hasn’t however prevented the pint sized performer from securing a regular berth in the Italian national team set-up and Giaccherini started three of Italy’s five matches at the recent Confederations Cup finals in Brazil.

A move to the Stadium of Light could tempt Giaccherini and the chance to secure regular first team football would in turn only improve his chances of retaining a spot in Cesare Prandelli’s national team set-up.

Di Canio has already worked wonders in the summer transfer window signing a host of talents including Modibo Diakité Valentin Roberge, Cabral, David Moberg Karlsson, El-Hadji Ba and Vito Mannone with United States striker Jozy Altidore expected to seal a move to the North-East in the coming days.
