Manchester United Turn To Real Madrid Playmaker After Move for Thiago Alcantara Falters

Old Trafford boss sets sights on Bernabeu midfielder.

Manchester United are said to be back in the race to sign Real Madrid midfielder Luka Modric, according to the Daily Star.

The Reds are targeting a £25million deal to sign Croatian midfielder Luka Modric this week. Although manager Carlo Ancelotti has revealed the playmaker remains in his long-term plans at the club, Manchester United hope to prize Modric away from the club, after they announced the £34million signing of Real Sociedad midfielder Asier Illarramendi.

United manager David Moyes is ready to accept defeat in the race to sign want-away Barcelona midfielder Thiago Alcantara, as the 22-year old is set to join former manager Pep Guardiola at Champions League winners Bayern Munich this summer in a £15million deal, and has therefore turned his attentions back to Modric, who rejected a move to the club last summer, in favour of a move to the Spanish capital from Tottenham.

Although making over 30 appearances for Madrid last term, the 27-year old was never a first team regular at the club, often making late substitute cameo’s, and United look to pounce on the unsettled player. Moyes has also identified Italy international Antonio Candreva as a potential addition this summer. The 26-year old was hugely impressive at the recent Confederations Cup, and is also a reported target for Tottenham.

Napoli are also said to be interested in signing Candreva, but must wait until star striker Edinson Cavani completes his £54million move to PSG, snubbing interested from United, City and Chelsea in the process.
