Paris Saint Germain defender Thiago Silva believes it is paramount that the club keep a hold of star striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic, though he has not discussed the Swede’s plans with the man himself, Sky Sports reports.
The mercurial Swedish international has been linked with a move away from the club ever since the signing of Edinson Cavani was announced earlier this month, but Silva sees him as a key figure in their upcoming defence of their Ligue 1 title and as well as the renewed assault on the Champions League.
Speaking to L’Equipe, Silva said: “Will Zlatan stay? I don’t know. You know how important he is.
“He is a winner and a friend too. We had a phone call but we didn’t talk about his future. I hope he will stay.
“We were close to beating Barcelona in the Champions League last season. This year I expect us to do well again and I think we could win the Champions League.”
Silva and Ibrahimovic both arrived in the French capital last summer in a double deal from AC Milan for a combined total of €65 million (£51.4m).
Last season Ibrahimovic bagged 30 goals to help the club retain their domestic title and was one of their stand out performers in the Champions League.
