Arsenal are reportedly on the verge of signing Brazilian midfielder Luiz Gustavo according to the Daily Mirror.

The Gunners are said to have agreed a £14m fee for the 26 year old Allianz Arena bit part player as Arsene Wenger looks set to bring in his second signing of the summer, to add to the free transfer capture of young French forward Yaya Sanogo.

Gustavo has been largely a squad player since moving to Bayern Munich from Hoffenheim back in January 2011 and his first team chances appear likely to be even more limited under Pep Guardiola, not least because the likes of Mario Gotze and Thiago Alcantara have been brought in to further boost the club’s central midfield complement.

Gustavo would add some much needed steel to an Arsenal midfield that has a fair bit of creativity but lacks steel. Arsene Wenger has failed to bring in an adequate replacement for Alex Song, who joined Barcelona last summer, in the hope that Abou Diaby would stay clear of injury for a sustained period of time, however the French international was ruled out for much of the 2012/13 campaign and is seemingly not a player the Gunners boss can rely upon.

Arsene Wenger may well be keen to bring in Gustavo ahead of Arsenal’s crucial Champions League qualifiers against Fenerbahce later this month.
