Cardiff City have completed the signing of Gary Medel from Sevilla for £11 million, breaking their record transfer for the third time this summer, BBC Sport reports.
Medel has signed a four year deal with the Bluebirds and is just waiting for a work permit before the deal can be completed.
The midfielder attended Cardiff’s friendly against Atletico Bilbao earlier on Saturday and brings with a reputation as a tough tackler, which should serve him well in the Premier League.
“We’re delighted to have secured the services of Gary, a tenacious and intelligent international midfielder,” manager Malky Mackay told Cardiff’s official website.
“Having had two seasons of regular football in La Liga, with 60-odd international caps to his name and three appearances at a World Cup, his experience will be an invaluable asset to our squad,” Mackay added.
“He’s played in a number of Boca v River Plate derbies in Argentina – one of the world’s biggest derby matches.
“I’ve no doubt that his background and pedigree will complement our midfield group in the Premier League.”
Medel is nicknamed “Pitbull” and has a long history of disciplinary problems, having been sent off 3 times in 31 appearances for Sevilla last season.
Cardiff have already signed Steven Caulker and Andreas Cornelius this summer as they prepare for their first ever season in the Premier League.
