Red Devils hope to be able to tie up a cut-price £5m deal for veteran shortly.
Premier League champions Manchester United remain interested in signing experienced Anzhi Makhachkala front man Samuel Eto’o this summer, according to reports in the Metro.
The prolific Cameroon international has been made available to buy by the big-spending Russian club, who are currently embarking on a massive fire sale of their biggest name star players so that they can offload as many high earners from the wage bill as possible.
And with doubts continuing to surround the future of wantaway striker Wayne Rooney at Old Trafford, with the England international said to still be determined to push through his controversial move to rivals Chelsea before the window closes on Sept 2, new United head coach David Moyes wants to line up Eto’o as a potential replacement for his own unhappy forward.
As a result, United officials are expected to meet with Eto’o’s representatives in London this week to discuss terms over the veteran’s move to the north west, although it is understood that the two parties still remain some way off when it comes to the Cameroonian’s wage demands.
Eto’o, who has scored 36 goals in 71 games for Anzhi since joining the club from Inter Milan in 2011, is believed to be asking for a weekly salary of around £300,000, which United are unwilling to meet, but if they can come to some sort of agreement, then the 32-year-old could be a Red Devil by the end of the month.
