Emirates Stadium side look to strengthen midfield with move for Bernabeu star.
Arsenal are reportedly preparing a bid for Real Madrid midfielder Xabi Alonso according to Sports Direct News.
The experienced Spanish international has a year to run on his current contract and the summer arrival of Asier Illarramendi from Real Sociedad may have left the former Liverpool man considering his options and could well leave the 31 year old open to a Premier League return.
Arsene Wenger failed in his pursuit of Brazilian Luiz Gustavo, who opted to remain in the Bundesliga and moved from Bayern Munich to Wolfsburg, and as such the Gunners boss may look to Alonso to offer a new dimension to his Arsenal midfield.
With Gareth Bale set to make a world transfer record move to the Bernabeu Carlo Ancelotti has been encouraged to sell players to help balance the books and Alonso is one of those he could look to cash in on, with Karim Benzema and Angel Di Maria also being linked with Real Madrid exits.
Juventus are also said to be keen on the rangy midfielder though a move to the Emirates Stadium could tempt the World Cup winner.
Wenger has re-signed Mathieu Flamini on a free transfer but may feel that Alonso offers extra quality and tenacity to a midfield that already possesses a great deal of creativity with the likes of Jack Wilshere, Santi Cazorla and Tomas Rosicky perhaps benefiting from the attributes the Real Madrid man can offer in abundance.
