United turn to La Liga star to solve midfield problems.
Manchester United have submitted a bid of £25million to Athletic Bilbao for 24-year-old midfielder Ander Herrera, according to the Daily Express.
The Basque-born midfield playmaker started his career with Real Zaragoza, before joining his hometown club Bilbao in 2011, where he has shone for the side in La Liga.
United manager David Moyes is desperate to sign a new midfielder before the end of the summer transfer window, having failed in his attempts to sign the likes of Thiago Alcantara, Cesc Fabregas and Kevin Strootman.
The Scot also continues to be frustrated in his attempts to sign Marouane Fellaini from his old club Everton, and may now feel Herrera is a more realistic target for him to find a suitable partner for Michael Carrick in the middle of the park.
Herrera’s current contract with Bilbao expires in 2016, and having lost key players Javi Martinez and Fernando Llorente in the last year, they may not be willing to sell the Spain Under-23 international for less than his minimum release clause fee of £31million.
Herrera has already played at Old Trafford, putting in a starring role in Bilbao’s surprise 3-2 win against United there in the 2011/12 Europa League.
