United to swoop for Newcastle playmaker.
Manchester United look likely to make a late bid for Newcastle midfielder Yohan Cabaye, according to Sports Direct News.
David Moyes’ search for a new playmaker to replace the recently-retired Paul Scholes looks like going to the final hours of the transfer window, with moves for Everton’s Marouane Fellaini and Athletic Bilbao’s Ander Herrera also being mooted.
However, United earlier ruled themselves out of a move for Real Madrid attacker Mesut Ozil, leading Arsenal to step up their interests in the German international, who is reportedly close to a £42million move to the Emirates Stadium.
Arsenal’s prioritising Ozil, meanwhile, has led to them cooling their interest in Cabaye, which may now lead Moyes to make him one of his top targets of the day.
The French international has been an impressive performer for Newcastle since joining the club from Lille in 2011, and could be a perfect fit in United’s midfield with his eye for a pass and occasional spectacular goal.
He is likely to cost around £20million, making him a cheaper option than Fellaini or Herrera, who would both be over £30million, and Newcastle are being linked with a move for Yoann Gourcuff as a replacement.
