Top seeds and world number 1 and 2, Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal will be aiming to set up a mouth-watering US open final when they face surprise semi-final opponents #9 seed Stanislas Wawrinka (Djokovic) and #8 seed Richard Gasquet (Nadal) on Saturday evening.

Given their status as multiple grand slam titles winners and there form to date at Flushing Meadows it’s no surprise to learn that the pair are heavy favourites to advance to the final.

The first match up see’s world number one Djokovic take on surprise semi-finalist Wawrinka (5.00pm). The Swiss star pulled off the biggest upset of the tournament when he defeated reigning US open champion Andy Murray in straight-sets in the quarter-final with his 6-4, 6-3, 6-2 win lifting the player out of the shadows of his countryman Roger Federer and into a first ever grand slam semi-final.

Wawrinka will have to up his game another level though if he is to continue his American run. In 15 games against his Serbian opponent he has only managed to win 2 games, and has not beaten Djokovic since 2006.

Earlier this year the pair met in the fourth round of the Australian Open with Wawrinka coming close in a 5 set decider losing the final set 12:10, a loss that made it 11 straight clashes without a win.

However history will count for nothing on Saturday and the 28 year old who has already knocked out 5th seed Tomas Berdych, Radek Stepanek, Ivo Karlovic, and Marcos Baghdatis and has dropped just two sets all tournament so far will head into the clash full of confidence.

Six-time Slam winner Djokovic meanwhile is the current world number 1 and true to form he has lived up to his billing in this year’s tournament. The Australian Open winner is bidding to reach a fourth successive US Open final and has lost just one set all tournament so far.

In the quarter-final he dispatched of 8th seed Mikhail Youzhny in four sets late on Thursday to earn his 14th consecutive trip to a Slam semi-final, claiming the final set 6-0.

Previously he has lost just 19 games in wins over Ricardas Berankis, Benjamin Becker, Joao Sousa and Marcel Granollers.

The second semi-final see’s number one seed Nadal face off as French-man Richard Gasquet.

The 27 year old Spaniard has won 9 titles this year including the French Open title and has an impressive 58-3 win record this year. While the majority of his success has come on clay Nadal has proved his versatility winning hard court titles at Montreal and Cincinnati.

Nadal has appeared a man on a mission this year after injury and illness saw him miss the Olympics and US open last year and the Australian Open in January.

Nadal has been impressive so far in New York with Philipp Kohlschreiber, in the the fourth round, the only player to take a set off him.

Ryan Harrison, Rogerio Dutra Silva and Ivan Dodig were dispatched in the first three rounds with the concession of just 21 games.

In the fourth round, number 22 seed Philipp Kohlschreiber managed to take the first set however Nadal showed his form running the next three 6-4, 6-3, 6-1 and he was even more dominant in the quarter-final dispatching Tommy Robredo 6-0, 6-2, 6-2.

Despite his strong showing so far, Nadal is not taking his place in the final for granted, saying “I hope to be ready to play a good match against Richard. If not, I will not have the chance to play the final,” the second-seeded Spaniard said.

“If I don’t play great match against Richard, I will see the final on TV. I am focused only to play great match in semi-finals against Richard.

Gasquet meanwhile has already won in Doha and Montpellier this year and in his first grand slam semi-final since reaching the last four at Wimbledon in 2007.

The French star has never beaten Nadal in 10 previous attempts but they have not met since 2011 and when they last clashed in the US open in 2009 Nadal was a comfortable winner.

Fatigue could prove to an issue for the eighth-seeded following two successive five set games against big-serving Milos Raonic of Canada in the fourth round, and again against fourth-seed Spaniard David Ferrer in the quarter-finals.
