Liverpool are reportedly ready to make a move for Real Madrid midfielder Xabi Alonso with speculation rife that the Bernabeu side are ready to offload the veteran Spaniard.

The Metro claim that the La Liga side are looking to bring in Chelsea midfielder Ramires, a move that will act as a death knell to Alonso’s future at the Bernabeu.

This source claims that should this occur then Liverpool would be in ‘pole position’ to snap up Xabi Alonso, who is still fondly remembered by the Anfield side’s faithful.

Real Madrid would apparently only seek a nominal fee for the 31 year old World Cup winner and Brendan Rodgers may see the inclusion of the experienced midfielder as an ideal way to strengthen his squad as they seek to secure Champions League qualification.

Alonso enjoyed a successful five season spell at the Merseyside club, winning the Champions League in his first campaign, and could well be tempted by a return to the Premier League club knowing that the signing of youngster Asier Illarramendi from Real Sociedad would limit his first team involvement and Ancelotti’s targeting of Ramires is perhaps confirmation of the Italian’s push to build for the future.
