Here are our picks for the best ten custodians in the English top tier, on the final page you will find our poll, vote for your favourite as we look to put together a ‘Premier League Best XI’

Wojciech Szczesny (Arsenal)

A big personality and eccentric as all great goalkeepers should be, Arsenal’s Wojciech Szczesny is not quite at the top level yet, though at the age of 23 he is certainly one of the most promising young shot-stoppers in Europe at the moment. Already a full international for Poland and undisputed number one for the Gunners, Szczesny is among the best in the league at the moment and has shown some big improvement in his form this season, helping Arsene Wenger’s side to the top of the Premier League after the first eight games.

Joe Hart (Manchester City)

Currently making the headlines for all the wrong reasons, Manchester City goalkeeper Joe Hart has certainly not been at his best for some time now, though it is easy to forget that not so long ago many were talking about him as perhaps the best in the world in his position. The England international has retained the trust of his club manager Manuel Pellegrini and national team coach Roy Hodgson and is still worthy of a place in the top ten goalkeeprs in the Premier League. Every great player has a difficult patch at some point in his career, and the 25-year-old has the natural ability to get back to his best and become a key player for City once again.

Tim Krul (Newcastle)

A player that continues to attract attention from several big clubs, Newcastle goalkeeper Tim Krul is certainly one of the Magpies’ stand-out players. The Dutch international may not get the best protection at his current club, but has kept his side in games with some superb individual displays and impressive reflex saves. It certainly wouldn’t be too surprising to see the 25-year-old snapped up sooner or later if he continues to produce the goods for Newcastle.

Michel Vorm (Swansea)

A superb signing by former Swansea manager Brendan Rodgers, Michel Vorm arrived in the Premier League for just £1.5m in 2011, and immediately established himself as a top player among the best in the country. The Dutchman previously impressed in the Eredivisie with Utrecht, and has done well against some stern competition to rack up 14 caps for the Netherlands national team. The likes of Arsenal, Liverpool and Barcelona have been linked with him in recent times, which shows just how well the Swans shot-stopper has done.

Brad Guzan (Aston Villa)

Some highly impressive displays since being made number one for Aston Villa last season have elevated American goalkeeper Brad Guzan to among the best in the Premier League. The former Chivas shot-stopper joined the club initially as a backup player, arriving for a bargain price of £600,000, but is now worth a great deal more after displacing veteran ‘keeper Shay Given as first choice for Paul Lambert’s side. Without Guzan’s fine saves last season, Villa could well have found themselves relegated, and the 29-year-old is certainly up there now with several other great ‘keepers from the USA to play in England.

Simon Mignolet (Liverpool)

A great signing by Liverpool this summer, Simon Mignolet’s superb form for Sunderland earned him a £9m move to Anfield, and he had attracted several other clubs before making the switch to the Reds. The Belgian’s fine performances kept the Black Cats in the Premier League last season and he made some memorable saves along the way to keep them in some tight games. The 25-year-old has continued to impress since making the step up to Liverpool, and made himself an instant fans’ favourite by saving a penalty on his debut for the club. Undoubtedly a top talent, and one of the reasons Brendan Rodgers’ side have started strongly in the league this season.

David De Gea (Manchester United)

Manchester United goalkeeper David De Gea may have taken some time to settle in England after his big-money move from Atletico Madrid, but the Spanish shot-stopper is now showing the great potential seen in him by Sir Alex Ferguson when he brought him to Old Trafford as a youngster. De Gea improved immensely last season and helped United to their 20th Premier League title and looks like a player who could go on to enjoy legendary status at the club that have had some great goalkeepers in their history.

Asmir Begovic (Stoke City)

A player who surely won’t be at Stoke for much longer, Asmir Begovic must be one of the best goalkeepers in Europe at the moment not playing for a top side. The Bosnian international has grown to be a vital member of Stoke’s team and it was a big surprise when he didn’t leave the club this summer, with the likes of Arsenal and Liverpool all said to be interested in him. Atletico Madrid and Napoli are also said to be admirers, and Manchester City thought about signing him as a replacement for Hart before Roberto Mancini left the club.

Hugo Lloris (Tottenham)

What a signing Hugo Lloris has been for Tottenham. The French international moved to White Hart Lane from Lyon for a bargain fee of just £8.5m and his sweeper-keeper style has gone down a treat with the fans at the north London club. A brave and intelligent ‘keeper, Lloris is known for helping out his defence by rushing out of goal to clear any danger, and he has proved pretty successful with this method. Lloris is also a top shot-stopper and could be crucial in helping Spurs claim the top four spot they so desire.

Petr Cech (Chelsea)

Chelsea’s Petr Cech is surely up there with the best goalkeepers ever to have played in the Premier League, and is surely in the top three in the world at the moment. The Czech Republic international first moved to Stamford Bridge from French side Rennes in 2004, and has been the undisputed first choice since then, helping the club to the most successful period of their history with three Premier League titles, as well as penalty-saving heroics to guide the club to an incredible victory in the Champions League final in 2012. A Chelsea legend and a true great of the game at the moment.
