Olivier Giroud once again produced the goods this weekend with a brace against Southampton but the North London club do not have all that much in the way of alternatives up front, especially with Theo Walcott only just making his comeback from a long time out injured and Lukas Podolski still sidelined.
Wenger’s first two targets in this regard come in the form of Liverpool’s Luis Suarez and Man United bench warmer Javier Hernandez.
Arsenal failed with two bids for Uruguayan international Suarez and it’s unlikely Liverpool would consider offers for the 26 year old in January, not as the Merseyside club are handily placed to clinch that coveted Champions League berth that would appease the in-form forward, who has netted nine goals in seven Premier League fixtures this season.
Hernandez may be a more viable option though it seems unlikely that Man United would consider selling to a direct rival, even if the Mexican is clearly only a back-up option for boss David Moyes.
This leaves Arsene Wenger with the option of pushing on with efforts to land the third of the targeted trio, West Brom youngster Saido Berahino.
A move for the 20 year old is perhaps more in keeping with Arsene Wenger’s usual transfer policy and the England Under 21 international has certainly shown a great deal of potential since breaking into the Baggies first team set-up, scoring against Arsenal in a Capital One Cup clash in September.
Berahino has scored six goals in all competitions this season and a further six in four appearances for the England Under 21 set-up.
