10. 1971 Dallas Cowboys

With Roger Staubach leading the way from the quarterback position and Bob Lily anchoring the defensive unit, the 1971 Cowboys were solid opposition.

Having gone 11-3 in the regular season, the defensive unit came to the fore in the playoffs, as they held the San Francisco 49ers to a single field goal in the NFC Championship game and repeated the feat against the Miami Dolphins in the Super Bowl.

This edition of the Cowboys beat their opponents by more than 13 points per game and boasted eight Pro Bowlers on the roster.

9. 1996 Green Bay Packers

Brett Favre was named NFL MVP in 1996, and while he completed almost 60 per cent of his passes for 3,899 yards and 39 touchdowns, the defence also played their role.

With a 13-3 regular season record, the Packers had little trouble in dismissing the New England Patriots in the Super Bowl and were a real dominant force throughout the year.

8. 1994 San Francisco 49ers

Steve Young emerged out of the shadow of Joe Montana and led the 49ers to a brilliant season with a 13-3 regular season record.

Young completed 70.3 per cent of his passes for 3,969 yards and 35 touchdowns, while Jerry Rice, Ricky Watters and Brent Jones played their roles receiving.

San Francisco scored 131 points in three playoff games, and cruised to a 49-26 Super Bowl win over the San Diego Chargers.

7. 1975 Pittsburgh Steelers

While there is plenty of debate over which of the Steelers editions of the 1970s was the best, the ’75 group were arguably the best of them all.

Pittsburgh went 12-2 in the regular season, won their games by 15 points per contest, and featured 11 Pro Bowlers on their way to winning the most famous prize in the sport.

6. 1989 San Francisco 49ers

Joe Montana completed more than 70 per cent of his passes and linked up with Jerry Rice and John Taylor throughout the ’89 season.

Roger Craig was also effective rushing, and ultimately helped them secure a 55-10 win in Super Bowl XXIV over the Denver Broncos.

5. 1999 St. Louis Rams

The Rams scored 526 point during their 13-3 regular season run, with Kurt Warner throwing 41 touchdowns passes and Marshall Faulk running 1,381 yards.

While they were also blessed with a solid defence, their all-round game came to the fore during the playoffs where they ultimately ended up beating the Titans 23-16 at the Super Bowl.

4. 1991 Washington Redskins

The Redskins were dominant that year, winning their games by 16 points per game while also boasting eight Pro Bowlers in their roster.

The offence topped the NFL in each category, and after going 14-2 they romped through the NFC playoffs, beating the Falcons and Lions before overcoming the Bills 37-24.

3. 1962 Green Bay Packers

Green Bay triumphed 16-7 in the Super Bowl against the Giants, but boasted impressive season records prior to that.

Led by Vince Lombardi and a handful of other greats, they went undefeated in pre-season which was merely the pre-cursor to their regular season domination. A great unit that had the beating of many of their rivals.

2. 1972 Miami Dolphins

The Dolphins went 17-0 through the regular season and playoffs and finished first on both offence and defence while sending 10 players to the Pro Bowl.

However, the argument against them being in top spot in purely down to the level of competition, and it is widely acknowledged that they rightfully miss out despite having a brilliant coach in Don Shula, and a line-up including the likes of Bob Griese and Larry Csonka.

1. 1985 Chicago Bears

With Jim McMahon leading the way as quarterback with the likes of Walter Payton playing integral roles in their success, the Bears were an almost perfect unit.

They finished the regular season with a 15-1 record, scoring 456 points while allowing only 198. After a 21-0 win over the Giants in the playoffs, they shut out the Rams 24-0 to claim the NFC title.

However, they had plenty left in the tank as they defeated the Pats 46-10 in the Super Bowl and have since taken their place at the top of many lists of the greatest teams in NFL history.
