January Transfer Window: Top Five Manchester United Targets

Manchester United’s top five targets of the January transfer window.

5. Fabio Coentrao – Real Madrid

With Patrice Evra’s future still hanging in the balance, a new left-back has been the order of the day and the Madrid man could end up heading toward the northeast in the new year. Coentrao was heavily linked with a switch to Old Trafford over the summer, and as his own playing situation is yet to improve in Spain he could probably have his arm twisted at taking another look at United and help Moyes’ men get their season back on track.

4. Nemanja Matic – Benfica

Former Chelsea youth product went out into the world and took Portugal by storm. He is now being linked with a host of top Premier League sides and David Moyes appears to be leading the pack when it comes to the speculation over who will land his signature.

However, Benfica rate him highly, and have valued him even higher, but with United struggling in the middle of the pitch this season and need a solution quickly. Handing Matic the chance to impress in a league that he left too soon could prove beneficial.

3. Xherdan Shaqiri – Bayern Munich

Moyes is known to be keen on strengthening his options in wide areas as the likes of Ashley Young and Nani have failed to impress this term, and with the two set to move on in the new year the manager will be looking toward new recruits to fill the void and inject some life onto the wings.

The Swiss international joined the current European champions from FC Basel in his homeland over the summer of 2012, but has so far failed to establish himself due to his path being blocked by the likes of Franck Ribery and Arjen Robben. He won’t have that problem at United…

2. Ander Herrera – Athletic Bilbao

United’s pursuit of the young midfielder over the summer seemed to come out of nowhere, but it got people pretty excited very quickly.

However, the move didn’t quite make it though after mystery lawyers and an unreasonably high release cause put a halt to proceedings. The Premier League champions have since said that they will up the ante in January in a bid to finally bring their man to the club. David Moyes’ apparent need for more central assets may yet lead the Red Devils back to Herrera’s doorstep in the January period.

1. Nicolas Gaitan – Benfica

Upon missing out on Real Madrid star Angel Di Maria, United have sought to turn their attentions elsewhere and have arrived to the conclusion that Gaitan may very well be their best option.

But Gaitan’s good form has seen him become a target for the likes of Tottenham Hotspur and Napoli too, so it is highly probably that Moyes’ path to the player will have some obstacles on it.

However, with Moyes under extreme pressure he will look to force a move through in order to land his man and rescue his side’s season.
