Old Trafford boss David Moyes is keen to strengthen his central defensive options in view of Rio Ferdinand’s advancing years and Nemanja Vidic’s injury problems.

The 25 year old Italian international is keen to leave the San Siro after falling out of favour with boss Walter Mazzarri and a move to Man United would surely interest the towering defender.

Man United have been monitoring the former Genoa man for some time and with both Chris Smalling and Phil Jones arguably better in alternative positions of right-back and defensive midfield respectively, such a move is perhaps all the more pressing.

Tottenham and Chelsea are also said to be keen on Ranocchia, who moved to Inter Milan in January 2011.

The 6ft 5in Italian would be well suited to life in the Premier League and a high profile move to Man United could perhaps help Ranocchia to secure a more prominent role in Cesare Prandelli’s national team set-up.
