The Portuguese was given his marching orders on Monday after the north London club had been thrashed 5-0 at home by Liverpool in the Premier League the previous afternoon, a stunning result that left Tottenham way down in seventh position in the top-flight standings after the first 16 matches of the season, five points off Manchester City in the fourth and final Uefa Champions League spot.

However, with the club having splashed out most of the proceeds from the 100 million euros sale of Welsh wide man Gareth Bale to La Liga giants Real Madrid last summer on the likes of big-name recruits such as Erik Lamela, Roberto Soldado, Christian Eriksen, Etienne Capoue, Nacer Chadli, Paulinho and Vlad Chiriches, it was felt that the Portuguese had to go.

And now Spurs have placed their former midfield player and the club’s current  technical co-ordinator, overseeing the development teams, in temporary charge for initially at least their next two fixtures against West Ham United in the Capital One Cup quarter-finals on Wednesday, followed by a trip to Southampton in the league on Sunday.

But there remains the possibility that the one-time England international could be handed the reins until the end of the campaign if he impresses in these next two matches.
