The France international has been one of Newcastle’s most consistent performers since arriving from former Ligue 1 champions Lille back in 2011, and he came close to joining Arsenal and Paris Saint Germain over the summer.

He had been keen on a move, but with the Magpies being reluctant to let him go and the fact that neither side could meet his valuation meant that he stayed put in the northeast for the first half of the campaign.

But despite all of that, Liverpool remain keen to make a move for him as they hope to be able to bolster their midfield that has been decimated by injury over this past month and manager Brendan Rodgers has identified the 27-year-old as the ideal man to step into the breach to help them achieve a top four finish.

The Reds have also been linked with the likes of Javier Pastore and Claudio Marchisio as Rodgers wants someone with a little more experience to relieve the pressure from youngster Philippe Coutinho.
