Reports in France have suggested that the 23-year-old has been a long time target of the north London outfit after impressing with his performances in the Champions League. And it was his performances against the Gunners during their two group stage encounters that are thought to have impressed Arsene Wenger the most.
Arsenal’s defence has been greatly improved this term, but part of the player’s appeal is that he is equally adept in a defensive midfield position, which is an area that the club needs to strengthen.
Nkoulou has been a key part of the Marseille squad since joining from Monaco in 2011, but the club are believed to be willing to let him move on for the right price to help whoever the new manager is to remould the squad.
Coach Elie Baup was fired earlier this month after a run of poor defeats left the club 15 points of league leaders PSG.
Napoli boss Benitez has his own interest in the player, though, and will look to gazump Arsenal with a bid of his own rumoured to be around the £17m mark.
