Chelsea January Transfer Window Plans: Three In, Three Out

Three players Chelsea should look to sign and sell during the January transfer window.

Eliaquim Mangala – Porto

Chelsea are known to be looking for a long term replacement for club skipper John Terry and have been linked with the French international ever since the summer.

The 23-year-old has a release clause installed in his contract, which runs until 2016, but the Portuguese club are believed to be willing to part with the player for a fee between £30-35m in the new year.

Fredy Guarin – Inter Milan

According to some reports the only thing holding up the Colombian’s move to Stamford Bridge is the fact that Inter Milan are holding out for an extra £2m.

However, should the club decide that he is worth the outlay they will have a powerful and direct midfielder to help them keep on the tails of the likes of Arsenal and Manchester City at the top of the Premier League table.

Radamel Falcao – Monaco

The Colombian was one of the most sought after players in the world over the summer, but shocked everyone by opting to link up with the Ligue 1 newcomers instead.

However, reports have suggested that he is not entirely happy with the standard of football being played in the Principality and could be tempted by a move away should the opportunity arise. With Chelsea still struggling for goals it would be wise of them to break open the chequebook and bring him on board.

Players They Should Sell

Michael Essien

It seems that Essien’s star at Stamford Bridge is now on the wane after failing to re-establish himself following his season on loan with Real Madrid.

He was at one point the best box-to-box midfielder in the Premier League, but a move could now be beneficial for all involved as he still clearly has something to offer another club and the Blues could do with the space and his wages coming off the bill. Serious injuries have hampered his career and he earns far too much to simply be considered as a squad player.

Demba Ba

Chelsea’s pursuit of a new striker has been well documented and should they manage to bring one on board that it is obvious that the player to suffer will be the former Newcastle man.

Ba’s problem is that Chelsea is probably a step too high for him, and as a number of Premier League sides continue to monitor his situation the Blues could still command a healthy fee for his services and he would be afforded the chance to re-launch his career at a club more suited to his abilities.

Kevin De Bruyne

The Belgian international was set to enjoy his first full season with the West London outfit after a successful loan with Bundesliga side Werder Bremen.

However, he has fallen out of favour with Jose Mourinho so spectacularly that he has been told he can leave by the Special One. A move away would be ideal for the young midfielder as he will have designs on a regular spot within his national team ahead of this summer’s World Cup.
