Liverpool January Transfer Window Plans: Three In, Three Out

Three players the Anfield side should buy and sell during the January transfer window.

Mohamed Salah – FC Basel

The Egyptian winger has become one of Europe’s hottest prospects this season thanks to his barnstorming performances in this season’s Champions League.

Brendan Rodgers is keen on brining in more creative talent to his midfield and could bring the 21-year-old in for a cut price fee. Reports have suggested that a deal to take him to Anfield is not far off and with his track record of working wonders with youth players could mean that everyone is left a winner.

Ryan Bertrand – Chelsea

The Chelsea full-back has fallen behind Ashley Cole and Cesar Azpilicueta in the Stamford Bridge pecking order and could look to move on in a bid to kick start his career and fulfil his potential as one of the country’s most promising young defenders.

The Reds are in desperate need for a new left back in the wake of Jose Enrique’s injury, meaning they’ve had to place youngster Jon Flanagan there as a stopgap.

Will Hughes – Derby County

Hughes has emerged as one of the country’s hottest prospects and Liverpool are believed to be leading the charge for his signature.

He is already a mainstay in the Derby first team and appears to be going from strength to strength. He also features heavily for the England under-21 side and his creativity in attacking positions would help the side greatly.

Iago Aspas

The Spaniard has failed to hit the ground running in the Reds side and has featured minimally since being brought in over the summer. His pace and finishing were highlighted as his most dangerous assets but so far he has displayed neither.

Whilst it may be too soon to truly give up on him, if a buyer was found then the funds could easily be re-invisted into areas of the squad that are in greater need.

Fabio Borini

Not only does Borini not meet the required standards to play for a club like Liverpool, he would be harming his own career by staying there.

Currently on loan with Sunderland, he would be able to better serve a club at a lower level, or back in his native Italy, as well as clearing a chunk from the Anfield wage bill in the process.

Pepe Reina

The Spaniard was an incredibly capable servant for the club during his time on Merseyside, up until last season anyway, when his erratic form helped contribute to a startlingly disappointing season for the Reds.

He is spending the season on loan with Napoli, and Belgian international Simon Mignolet has now taken his place and doesn’t look like he wants to give it up either. A permanent sale would raise funds and get him off the wage bill.
