Gunners boss Arsene Wenger has long been linked with a move to sign Draxler with the Daily Mirror claiming the Premier League club were closing in on a deal to snap up the wonder-kid last month.
The German youngster is being hotly pursued by a number of Europe’s ‘Elite’ with French side PSG providing the sternest test to Arsenal’s challenge to sign the German international, who has a £37.5m release clause.
A move for 20 year old Draxler would adhere to Arsene Wenger’s youthful transfer policy and the Gunners have proven with their £42.5m siging of Mesut Ozil that they are capable of forking out big sums for the right talents.
Draxler is rightly considered one of the hottest prospects in European football and may well feel his ambitions can not be served at Schalke and had the Bundesliga side not made it through to the last 16 of the Champions League then one would imagine a January exit would’ve been far more likely, as it is a summer switch does appear to be on the cards.
Though it’s true that Arsenal have a raft of creative midfielders there is scope for another addition in this regard given the fact that Tomas Rosicky is out of contract in the summer and Mikel Arteta has now been exclusively used in a holding role.
Draxler has already racked up 133 Schalke appearances and has ten national team caps to his name and he is likely to be a prominent member of Joachim Low’s 2014 World Cup finals squad.
