The incidents that have grabbed the headlines over the years.
As in any workplace the football field (or training ground or dug-out) is a hot bed of tempers and anger and occasionally things will boil over.
Here are the 10 biggest bust-ups from the sport.
10. Bruce Grobbelaar v Steve McManaman
After Everton scored in the Merseyside derby the famously animated goalkeeper confronted team-mate McManaman and grabbed the midfielder by the jaw, believing the Englishman’s poor clearance to be the reason the Toffees had found the net.
McManaman wisely walked away after a quick shove, as everyone knows that ‘keeper’s are crazy.
9. Roberto Mancini v Mario Balotelli
The relationship between the Manchester City manager and controversial striker was always strained and during a training session things became too much as the two Italians clashed – unfortunately for the club a Daily Mail photographer was ready to get the snaps.
8. Roy Keane v Mick McCarthy
Player/manager bust-ups are nothing new however, as the fiery former Manchester United captain was sent home from the 2002 World Cup for a very public falling out with Republic of Ireland boss McCarthy – at least the midfielder’s dog got plenty of walks (those of you that remember the incident may chuckle at this).
7. Eyal Berkovic v John Hartson
Whilst the pair were at Aston Villa the Israel international aimed a kick at Hartson during training, only for the striker to respond with a hit to Berkovic’s head. They later apologised, but the damage was done.
6. Ally McCoist v Neil Lennon
The Old Firm derby is not known for tea and cakes admittedly, but this was a particularly tense affair as three players were sent off, before then Rangers assistant McCoist had a touchline brawl with the Celtic manager.
5. Ricardo Fuller v Andy Griffin
Those who say footballers don’t care need look no further than this reaction from striker Fuller, who slapped Stoke City team-mate Griffin when the defender’s mistake led to a goal. It also of course shows their petulance and for this the Jamaican earned a red card and a three-match ban.
4. Graeme Le Saux v Gareth Batty
Back when Blackburn Rovers were actually good these two former England internationals and then team-mates had a full scale fight on the pitch as the Lancashire club crashed to a 3-0 Champions League defeat to Spartak Moscow.
3. Gennaro Gattuso v Joe Jordan
This is about as close to Fight Club as football gets, as legendary hard men Gattuso and Jordan squared up during the AC Milan v Tottenham Hotspur Champions League clash.
Despite his age, our money was on Jordan.
2. Joey Barton v Ousmane Dabo
The theory of ‘Dr Joey’ and ‘Mr Barton’ was never more prominent than in this attack on then Manchester City team-mate Dabo, for as much as the midfielder philosophises on Twitter there is also a terrible angry streak. A training ground bust-up resulted in a detached retina for the Frenchman and a four-year suspended prison sentence for Barton.
1. Kieron Dyer v Lee Bowyer
The ultimate embarrassment for any manager is to see two of your own players fighting on the pitch and then being sent off – just like Dyer and Bowyer were for Newcastle United.
