The 25 year old has signed a five and a half year contract and returns to the club he represented briefly before he moved to join Lisbon based side Benfica as part of the deal that saw David Luiz move in the opposite direction back in January 2011.

The deal is said to have cost Chelsea £21m and the Serbian has spoke of his delight at returning to the West London club, stating;

“I am very happy for this opportunity. I just want to say I will give my best to help the team and make the Chelsea fans happy,”

On the signing Jose Mourinho added;

‘I am very pleased that Nemanja is returning to Chelsea. He has grown as a player in Portugal and has become a fantastic all-round midfielder. I am sure he will become a very important member of the squad and help us to achieve our ambitions.’

Matic came to the fore at Benfica last season where he was a pivotal figure as his side battled for silverware of three fronts only to end up with runners-ups medals in both the domestic league and cup competitions as well as in the Europa League.
