Water carrier is also wanted by Napoli and AC Milan too.

The Ghana international has largely found himself as being surplus to requirements so far this season under returning Blues head coach Jose Mourinho, despite the self-styled Special One having recalled the player from his season-long loan switch to La Liga giants Real Madrid in the previous campaign.

However, Essien has since spent more time warming the substitutes’ bench than actually getting on the field of play under the Portuguese, with the 31-year-old having so far featured in just the nine matches in total for the west London club, five of which have come in the Premier League.

And now with the Fifa World Cup finals coming up fast in Brazil at the end of the season, Essien is said to be keen to quit Stamford Bridge before the winter transfer window slams shut for business for the season again at the end of the month in order to protect his place in the Ghana squad for the tournament.
