The Catalan side have been linked with an interest in Brazilian Ramires for some time and having seen Jose Mourinho opt to re-sign Nemanja Matic it is perhaps unsurprising that Barcelona would once again target the 26 year old battler.

One would have to wonder why Barca boss Gerardo Martino would consider the need to move for Ramires given that he has experienced battler Sergio Busquets, Javier Mascherano and Alex Song to provide the steel in the heart of the Nou Camp midfield.

Interest in David Luiz is however far more understandable given the lack of effective central defensive options in the Barcelona squad.

The Blues fan favourite has forced his way back into Jose Mourinho’s first team plans in recent weeks but is still by no means guaranteed a spot in the Chelsea manager’s starting line-up, making nine starts out of 21 Premier League fixtures this season.

When used in a defensive midfield role Luiz has looked solid enough but one imagines Barcelona’s interest is in relation to the lack of options Martino has at the back, currently restricted to just two effective senior central defenders in the form of veteran Carles Puyol and Gerard Pique, often leading to Mascherano being used in a makeshift role when necessary.
