5. He’s inept in the transfer market

Having done so well on such a limited budget at Everton, he must have been champing at the bit to get his hands on a bigger chequebook at Old Trafford, only to find that nobody actually wanted to join him at the club.

He can maybe be accused of being over ambitious – the likes of Cesc Fabregas was never going to sign for United, not only because of his Arsenal ties, but because he’s at Barcelona, and this United squad is in a transition period.

After so long in charge, United are not the same attraction they once were under Ferguson, and Moyes needs to recognise that and plan accordingly to avoid further disappointment.

4. No sense of timing

When he arrived over the summer, it was the perfect opportunity for him to clear out the decks and turn his squad over.

Several players that pollute the first team would get nowhere near the starting XI’s of the club’s domestic rivals and they will continue to amble along until they are replaced.

The likes of Jonny Evans, Anderson, Ashley Young, Tom Cleverley and Antonio Valencia are all in and around the first team, but none have done anything to keep hold of their places. Meanwhile Rio Ferdinand, Patrice Evra and Ryan Giggs and Nemanja Vidic are all slowing the team down.

Wanting to give players the benefit of the doubt, or a start with a clean slate is admirable enough, but on a wholesale scale like that it’s positively suicidal.

3. Has no experience with star names

Whilst at Everton, it’s fair to say that they never had a star studded line up – the most popular players they had were Tim Cahill and Marouane Fellaini.

Fellaini is now with him at United, and he is struggling to adapt into being a cog in a bigger machine, rather than being a big fish in a medium sized pond and Cahill is now winding down his career in the States.

Cahill in particular is a strong point of reference here. When he joined the club he was a hotly tipped youngster coming up from Millwall, he was on the verge of being a great player already, but was given the freedom to grow and somehow they managed to keep hold of him all throughout his peak. At United, he has tried to go for the quick fix, which has, and will continue to fail.

2. Wayne Rooney

When Ferguson was in charge Rooney wanted to leave. Now that Moyes is in charge, he definitely wants to leave.

For some reason Moyes just cannot get along with the England star and as a result their most prized asset will probably have a long and successful career somewhere else leaving Moyes to rue what could have been.

It is unlikely that the 28-year-old will stay to patch things up with the Scot, and should he leave the club will have lost it’s most valuable player to build the squad around, and that will not only cost the club in the present, but in the future too.

1. Too scared to step out of Sir Alex’s shadow

It’s great to have a mentor, someone who can guide you when you’re lost and give advice when there is nothing but doubt all around. Only a mentor is supposed to put an arm around you and whisper in your ear, not watch over your shoulder and react to every disappointing incident for the nation’s press to pick up on.

By not having a respectful but firm word with Ferguson, he’s doing his reputation and career no good at all. The whole country knows that he’s being run like a puppet and by not standing up to that and changing it he’ll run himself out of a job and United into further turmoil.
