GK: Neville Southall

The Toffees’ Wales international was rightly considered to be the best goalkeeper in the world for a period during the Eighties, and it is for that reason that the former Everton No 1 gets the nod between the posts here.

RB: Steve Nicol

One of the few defenders to have ever been voted as the Footballer of the Year in the English top flight, as the versatile Scot was back in 1989, while the attacking full back was also a constant source of goals down either flank for the Reds in the late Eighties and early Nineties.

CB: Alan Hansen

Liverpool’s most decorated skipper, but also the Merseyside giants’ greatest-ever central defender too, with the ice-cool Scot the winner of countless league titles, FA Cups, League Cups and European Cups during his illustrious career at Anfield in the late Seventies and Eighties.

CB: Kevin Ratcliffe

The Welsh defender’s selection in the heart of this combined XI’s back four may cause a few raised eyebrows, however, that would be to underestimate both just what a fine centre back and inspirational leader the Everton skipper was for the Toffees during their glory days in the mid to late 80s.

LB: Leighton Baines

Perhaps now established as Everton;s greatest-ever left back after seven years of fine service and near-faultless displays on the left-hand side of the Merseysiders’ back four, as well as also countless assists from the flanks too.
