GK: Neville Southall

The Toffees’ Wales international was rightly considered to be the best goalkeeper in the world for a period during the Eighties, and it is for that reason that the former Everton No 1 gets the nod between the posts here.

RB: Steve Nicol

One of the few defenders to have ever been voted as the Footballer of the Year in the English top flight, as the versatile Scot was back in 1989, while the attacking full back was also a constant source of goals down either flank for the Reds in the late Eighties and early Nineties.

CB: Alan Hansen

Liverpool’s most decorated skipper, but also the Merseyside giants’ greatest-ever central defender too, with the ice-cool Scot the winner of countless league titles, FA Cups, League Cups and European Cups during his illustrious career at Anfield in the late Seventies and Eighties.

CB: Kevin Ratcliffe

The Welsh defender’s selection in the heart of this combined XI’s back four may cause a few raised eyebrows, however, that would be to underestimate both just what a fine centre back and inspirational leader the Everton skipper was for the Toffees during their glory days in the mid to late 80s.

LB: Leighton Baines

Perhaps now established as Everton;s greatest-ever left back after seven years of fine service and near-faultless displays on the left-hand side of the Merseysiders’ back four, as well as also countless assists from the flanks too.

LM: Kevin Sheedy

The Republic of Ireland international had a fearsome left-footed shot on him, while the wide man was also a devastating crosser of the football and a brilliant taker of set plays too, especially when it came to free kicks.

CM: Steven Gerrard

The Reds’ current skipper is on course to become one of, if not the, greatest player the club has ever produced, which is quite some accolade when you think about all the legendary performers over the years at Anfield.

RM: John Barnes

What a sight to behold the England international was in his pomp charging down the flanks for the Reds in the late Eighties and early Nineties, when no defence in the English top flight was capable of stopping the winger when in full flight.

FW: Kenny Dalglish

Another candidate for the title of Liverpool’s greatest ever player, with the Scottish attacker lighting up Anfield during the late Seventies and Eighties with his brilliant array of attacking skills, dinks, chips, lobs and goals that are hard to better.

ST: Ian Rush

The Reds’ all-time record goalscorer and a man who just knew where the goal was, and who also had an uncanny ability of finding the back of the net as well, which he did on a regular basis throughout the 80s and half of the 90s too at Anfield.

ST: Graeme Sharp

Lethal and vastly under-rated Scotland international who was best remembered as being a scorer of great goals, rather than a great goalscorer during his decade at Goodison.
