The 19-year-old, who predominantly operates as a right-back, made his debut for the first team over the weekend in a cup tie against Gil Vicente.
Reports in the Portuguese capital have the Premier League giants circling for his signature, but Benfica aren’t willing to give him up without a fight and are said to be holding out for around £10m for his signature.
However, the fee could be a potential stumbling block as City are thought to be wanting to pay around half of that fee, especially as he has yet to establish himself within the first team.
City boss Pellegrini first noticed the player at last year’s under-20 World Cup, where he played a staring role for the Portuguese under-19 national side.
The Premier League title hopefuls could also look to tie in the deal with a move for Cancelo’s teammate Andre Gomes.
However, they may face competition for Gomes as both Monaco and Liverpool are keen to bring him on board too.
