Old Trafford boss David Moyes is in need of an out and out defensive midfielder as presently he doesn’t possess one and prior to his injury the Scot had opted to use summer signing Marouane Fellaini in a holding role that severely restricted the Belgian’s involvement in the final third.
The 26 year old Brazilian has been a huge success since moving to FC Porto in 2007 but is currently stuck in extended contractual talks with the Primeira Liga side which has alerted a number of prospective suitors, among them being Liverpool who see Fernando as an ideal replacement for injured enforcer Lucas Leiva.
A move to Man United may well tempt Fernando and a high-profile switch could help the former Under 20 international to pick up a long awaited first senior Brazilian national team cap.
Fernando has won a host of honours at FC Porto including four domestic titles and a Europa League triumph.
David Moyes has welcomed in club record signing Juan Mata from Chelsea and may well feel that as well as the addition of some much needed creativity it would also be crucial to bring in some bite in the centre of the park and the offloading of Anderson to Fiorentina offers up space for just such a signing.
