GK: David de Gea

RB: Rafael

With new signing Juan Mata likely to play from the right, Rafael will be tasked with providing much-needed width to the United attack.

CB: Phil Jones

The versatile England international could be asked to play in centre midfield, with Chris Smalling at centre half, but with Darren Fletcher fit again, Jones may be handed a run of games in one position.

CB: Jonny Evans

Not the most glamorous player on United’s books but one of the most effective. With Nemanja Vidic suspended and Rio Ferdinand injured, Evans is guaranteed to play.

LB: Patrice Evra

With Leighton Baines signing a new deal at Everton, Evra likely to keep his place at left back until at least the end of this season.

CM: Darren Fletcher

The Scot was the only player who looked like scoring in United’s penalty shoot-out defeat against Sunderland and adds a calm head in midfield at all times.

CM: Tom Cleverly

After being rested for the match against the Black Cats, the England midfielder should return to the line-up and will be tasked with supply United’s dangerous wide-men, Juan Mata and Adnan Januzaj.

AMR: Juan Mata

The only negative of the Spaniard’s big-money transfer to United is the impact it could have on the team’s width. Mata is likely to start from the right of football but will have creative license to roam.

AML: Adnan Januzaj

Mata’s arrival should relieve some of the creative burden from Januzaj’s young shoulders and the teenager could play even better as a result. With Wayne Rooney fit again, he will likely return to the wing.

AMC: Wayne Rooney

The England star is expected to be fit after his latest injury lay-off and will return to an attacking midfield role behind the striker.

ST: Danny Welbeck

With Robin van Persie not expected to be fit, Welbeck will again be tasked with leading the line and the in-form England star will be excited at the prospect of service from both Mata and Rooney.
