Spurs’ technical director Franco Baldini has been in Italy all this week checking up on a number of the club’s targets and opening talks with the representatives of several of them, and one is said to be the Viola stopper.

However, with time running out a move this month may be too difficult to pull off, but should a deal fail to materialise they will return for him over the summer.

The former Manchester City man joined the club as part of the deal that saw Matija Nestasic head the other way some 18 months ago, and he has been in impressive form as the club have continued their endeavour for Champions League football.

He still has two-and-a-half years to run on his current deal in Florence, so Spurs will have to cough up around £7m if they really do want to bring him to White Heart Lane.

Sherwood is believed to be keen on strengthening his defence after two heavy defeats at the hands of Liverpool and Man City dealt blows to their own European aspirations just before Christmas.
