Three Players Tottenham Should Have Signed This January

Three players Tottenham boss Tim Sherwood should have bought in the transfer window.

Dimitar Berbatov

The sultry Bulgarian is not everyone’s cup of tea but he comes with bags of ability and Premier League experience. The 32-year-old wanted out of Fulham, was keen to stay in London and was available for almost nothing. Doubtless Tim Sherwood had reservations over his temperament and commitment, but the former Spurs striker would have been a great alternative to Roberto Soldado and Emmanuel Adebayor, once Jermain Defoe departs for MLS later this month. As it is, Tottenham are now injuries to their current senior strikers away from playing Harry Kane against the likes of Liverpool, Arsenal and Chelsea during their run-in. On deadline day, Berbatov signed for Monaco on loan until the end of the season.

Benoit Assou-Ekotto

Yes, yes, we know he already plays for Tottenham but hear us out… Tim Sherwood opted against recalling the Cameroonian from his season-long loan at QPR, despite a dearth of quality at left-back in his Tottenham squad. The exciting but raw Danny Rose is first choice for the position but if the 23-year-old suffers another long-term injury, as he did earlier this term, Sherwood will be forced to use his best centre-half Jan Vertonghen out of position or call upon the hopelessly right-footed Kyle Naughton. There is an argument that Assou-Ekotto is something of a disruptive influence but he never caused any problems under Harry Redknapp at White Hart Lane, and would have provided valuable competition for Rose.

Mirko Vucinic

With Gylfi Sigurdsson and Nacer Chadli both failing auditions on the left wing in recent weeks, Tim Sherwood was forced to move Christian Eriksen back to the flank for the trip to Hull City. The position remains a problem for the head-coach but it’s one  Vucinic would help solve. The 30-year-old forward has bags of experience and can play up front as well as on the flanks. The Montenegrin isn’t getting much game time at Juventus at present and could have surely been persuaded to swap Turin for London by Spurs director football Franco Baldini.
