The 25-year-old will link up with the Spanish outfit over the summer after putting pen-to-paper on a lucrative five-year deal with his fee believed to be somewhere in the region of €12m.
United were thought to be the frontrunners to land his signature after Los Che saw a loan move for the defender fall through toward the end of the January transfer window due to financial difficulties.
However, the player and club continued with their discussions and managed to agree a new deal, which will commence from July 1st when the summer transfer window opens.
The news means that United boss David Moyes will have to go back to square one to look for new centre-back replacements for veteran duo Nemanja Vidic and Rio Ferdinand, who are both out of contract at the end of the current campaign.
Moyes is keen to rebuild his squad and had targeted the Argentine international as the ideal replacement for Vidic.
