City boss Manuel Pellegrini is said to be keen on strengthening his midfield options this summer as they have struggled to find suitable backup for Fernandinho and Yaya Toure in deeper positions.

The club had thought to have been favourites ahead of Arsenal to land Porto star Fernando, but now look to be disappointed in their pursuit as he has committed his future to the Portuguese giants by penning a new deal with them, and leaving City to consider other options.

And now Gustavo may be the most likely candidate to replace him as their top target thanks to the €20m buy-out clause installed in his contract.

The Brazilian had been heavily linked with a move to Arsenal over the summer when he announced his desire to leave Bayern Munich, only for him to stay in Germany and join Wolfsburg instead.

However, with the 26-year-old likely to remain a backup to Fernandinho at the Etihad Stadium, he may yet turn down an opportunity to move to the Premier League.
