Barcelona Predicted Line-Up for Champions League Fixture With Manchester City

The Catalans come to the Etihad Stadium for the first time.

For the first time in history Manchester City and Barcelona go head-to-head in a competitive match, as the two sides face each other in the last-16 of the Champions League.

It’s a huge fixture in the competition, which many are billing as the tie of the round and it’s difficult to predict the outcome.

Here’s how CaughtOffside thinks Barca will line-up against the Citizens, as Gerardo Martino welcomes back some key players.

Goalkeeper – Victor Valdes

With the Spaniard fit there’s not dispute that the 32-year-old will start between the sticks.

Right-back – Dani Alves

Perhaps the best attacking full-back in world football, although the Brazilian can be suspect in defence and David Silva should look to exploit this.

Centre-back – Carles Puyol

With question marks over Javier Mascherano’s form and fitness, the Catalans’ veteran captain should get the nod to start at the back.

Centre-back – Gerard Pique

The most important player in Martino’s back four, with the Spain international providing some much needed leadership and talent in what is often a leaky defence.

Left-back – Adriano

Having impressed in recent times on the left side the Brazilian is likely to keep his place ahead of Jordi Alba – particularly away from home due to the 29-year-old’s superior defensive nous.

Defensive midfield – Sergio Busquets

Perhaps one of the most under appreciated players in the game, Busquets sits in front of the back four breaking up play and distributing to Barca’s plethora of attacking talent.

Central midfield – Xavi

Made a cameo in the 6-0 La Liga victory over Rayo Vallecano at the weekend following injury and the 33-year-old is likely to get into the starting XI ahead of Cesc Fabregas for this one.

Central midfield – Andres Iniesta

Undeniably still one of the best players in the world and the Spaniard will operate slightly ahead of Busquets and Xavi and pose a serious threat to the City goal – Javi Garcia will need to be on alert.

Right forward – Alexis Sanchez

It’s been a great season for the Chile international to date and the 25-year-old has made the position his own, probably getting the nod ahead of Pedro after scoring 17 goals this season.

Centre-forward – Lionel Messi

After a bout of injuries at the start of the current campaign, the four-time Ballon d’Or winner announced he is back to his best on Saturday with a brace in the Spanish top tier.

Left forward – Neymar

In more goof news for the Catalonia outfit as their £48.6m signing also returned to the pitch against Vallecano and the Brazilian will be a serious threat down the left flank.
