10. Watford 2006-07

The Hornets made their long awaited return to the top flight under Aidy Boothroyd and enjoyed a run to the semi finals of the FA Cup, which made up for their poor season. However, they were too lightweight in attack and let star player Ashley Young leave midway through the season to their detriment.

An ageing side that was built by Martin O’Neill began to unravel under the stewardship of Dave Bassett and their relegation signalled the end of five up-and-down years in the top flight.
8. Swindon Town 1993-94

Swindon’s only season in the Premier League came when there were still 22 teams in the top flight and they spent the entirety of it rooted to the bottom of the table, conceding a century of goals as they were sent straight back down to the old First Division.

The Foxes didn’t finish bottom that year, but found themselves a whopping 14 points behind Norwich, who were also relegated that year. Spent the entire season in the drop zone from November and Mark Mghee’s departure paved the way for Martin O’Neill and an imminent return.

The Baggies had waited for 16 years to get back into the top flight and this season was the beginning of a series of yo-yo visits to the Premier League. Started well with three straight wins but their instability was their undoing and they were down.

Bradford pulled off a minor miracle in surviving their previous season in the Premier League, but Paul Jewell’s departure midway through the season saw Chris Hutchings and Jim Jeffries unable to steady the ship and they went hurtling back down the divisions at an alarming rate.
4. Ipswich Town 1994-95

This was the season that Town were hammered 9-0 by a rampant Manchester United, and in all honestly that is all their season will be remembered for. Conceded four goals against six opponents that year too, were down from the start.

The Hornets made their debut in the Premier League at the turn of the century, and many had hoped to usher in a new age under former boss Graham Taylor. However, despite an early win against Liverpool, their failure to strengthen the side appropriately cost them in the long run and they found themselves glued to the bottom of the table from January onwards.

What a stinker – there was a total lack of pride at County that year and as the season wore on they hoisted the white flag. Failed to invest over the summer and paid a hefty price for it. They will likely hold this record for a very long time to come.
