World Cup 1990

Lost to Germany in the semi-finals

The first of many shoot-out heartbreaks for the Three Lions…

After battling to a 1-1 draw with their arch-rivals Germany, England embarked on their first ever penalty shoot-out.

With the World Cup final looming, Stuart Pearce hit a feeble effort straight against the German keeper’s legs, before Chris Waddle blasted way over the bar to confirm the defeat. The Germans slotted every penalty.

Euro 1996

Beat Spain in the Quarters

England’s first, and only shoot-out victory.

David Seaman was the hero, watching Spain’s first penalty taker crash his effort against the bar, and saving their final effort from Nadal. The shoot-out was most famous for Stuart Pearce redeeming himself from six years previous, confidently tucking his effort home.

Euro 1996

Lost to Germany in the semi-finals

Arguably the most heartbreaking of all England’s shoot-out defeats, the Three Lions were a few successful kicks away from reaching the final on home soil.

England confidently slotted their first five spot-kicks with consummate ease, but unfortunately, Germany did as well. When sudden death arrived, centre-half Gareth Southgate hit a tame effort straight at the keeper, and Germany scored the next one to win the game.

World Cup 1998

Lost to Argentina in the Last 16

By this point, England were starting to make a habit of penalty shoot-out defeats.

After Michael Owen had announced himself to the world with a wondergoal, and Sol Campbell had an effort cruelly chalked off in extra time, Paul Ince and David Batty missed their spot-kicks to send Argentina through.

Euro 2004

Lost to Portugal in the Quarters

Like Germany, Portugal were to become England’s other penalty shoot-out nemesis…

After playing out a frantic 2-2 draw, with Michael Owen and Frank Lampard scoring, national hero David Beckham slipped and sent the first penalty of the shoot-out miles over the crossbar – six years after being sent off against Argentina.

The forgotten Darius Vassel missed his penalty in sudden death, before the Portuguese keeper stepped up and slotted his effort into the bottom corner of David James’s net.

World Cup 2006

Lost to Portugal in the Quarters

Arguably England’s most depressing shoot-out defeat saw Frank Lampard, Steven Gerrard and Jamie Carragher all miss penalties after a miserable 0-0 draw.

Owen Hargreaves slotted his, but Cristiano Ronaldo was more than happy to confidently stick his effort into the top corner to give Paul Robinson no chance.

Euro 2012

Lost to Italy in the Quarters

In the most recent penalty shoot-out heartache, Roy Hodgson’s side was sent crashing by an Italian team who made it all the way to the final.

Gerrard made up for his miss six years earlier with a confident effort, and England were confident of progression after Italy missed their second penalty. However, consecutive misses from Ashley Young and Ashley Cole missed sent England crashing out for an international football record, six out of seven times.
