An enormous amount of money was spent by Premier League clubs last summer on a host of expensive footballers.

While some have come good, the majority have taken time to settle, and a sizeable amount have been complete flops.

Based on what they’ve offered to their clubs this season, here’s out 10 worst!

10) Tiago Ilori – Liverpool – £7m

For a club that isn’t rolling in cash, spending £7m on a centre-back who hasn’t played a single minute of first-team football seems completely nonsensical. Even with Daniel Agger and Mamadou Sakho picking up injuries, Ilori’s still been shipped out on loan to Granada…

9) Andre Schurrle – Chelsea – £18m

Mourinho flatly prefers the likes of Willian and Eden Hazard in the wide areas, and the 23-year-old German has been restricted to only seven Premier League starts. He’s unquestionably talented, but what was the point in spending such big money on a player to warm the bench?

8) Iago Aspas – Liverpool – £8m

Along with Tiago Ilori (and arguably Simon Mignolet, Luis Alberto and maybe even Mamadou Sakho) Aspas has been a complete waste of money. He’s technically abysmal, and hasn’t registered a single goal in his measly five Premier League starts. Again – what was the point?

7) Ricky van Wolfswinkel – Norwich – £9m

The Dutchman arrived at Carrow road with a reputation of being a clinical finisher, but the 25-year-old hasn’t scored a single goal since the very first day of the season!

6) Dani Osvaldo – Southampton – £15m

The Italian forward scored a brilliant goal against Manchester City, but otherwise failed to adapt to English football after arriving at Southampton for a club record fee. Osvaldo had a training ground scrap with Jose Fonte, and was shipped back to Serie A on loan, where he’ll likely remain.

5) Jozy Altidore – Sunderland – £9m

Altidore has badly struggled for relegation battlers Sunderland this season. His physicality has not hidden his lack of touch and guile, and he’s looked very average indeed. One goal in 17 Premier League starts really is quite shocking.

4) Andreas Cornelius – Cardiff City – £8m

Cornelius broke Cardiff’s transfer record in the summer, (which they went on to break again with the Gary Medel signing) but the young Dane wasn’t given a single Premier League start! He’s now been sent back to Denmark on loan, and it’s very much doubted if he’ll ever make it in the Premier League.

3) Marouane Fellaini – Manchester United – £27m

Fellaini was undeniably effective at Everton, as his power and physicality in the middle of the park suited their combative style of play. At United though, he arguably lacks the footballing ability to consistently create from midfield, which is worrying, considering his monster transfer fee.

2) Roberto Soldado – Tottenham – £26m

The poor Spanish forward has cut a forlorn figure on the pitch recently. The huge money signing hasn’t scored a goal in 2014, and looks visibly drained of confidence. In fact, Soldado has only scored one goal from open play in the Premier League all season.

1) Erik Lamela – Tottenham – £30m

Lamela became one of the most expensive young players of all time when Spurs shelled out a mammoth fee for his services – but under both AVB and Tim Sherwood, the Argentine has only been given three Premier League starts! Granted, he may eventually come good, but at the moment, he’s looking like an enormous waste of money.
