Manchester City Player Ratings After Capital One Cup Final Victory Over Sunderland

How the Citizens stars rated on a great day for the club at Wembley.

Manchester City won their third major trophy of the Sheikh Mansour era after beating Sunderland 3-1 in the Capital One Cup final at Wembley.

The Citizens went 0-1 down in the first half courtesy of a Fabio Borini strike, but rallied after half-time and secured victory through brilliant goals from Yaya Toure and Samir Nasri, before Jesus Navas settled things late on.

Here’s how the City players rated.

Costel Pantilimon – 6

As the chosen cup goalkeeper the Romanian started ahead of Joe Hart and whilst could do nothing about Borini’s goal, could have been more assured between the sticks.

Pablo Zabaleta – 7

The reliable Argentine gave another good performance at right-back, being solid at the back when required but also bombing forward to support the attack.

Vincent Kompany – 6

Not the best game for the captain who is usually so brilliant and City’s defence was a lot more shaky than the one goal conceded suggests.

Martin Demichelis – 5

The Black Cats had clearly picked the Argentinian out as the weak link and rightly so, as the defender was left for dead when Borini scored and seemed to be a burden on Kompany.

Aleksandar Kolarov – 5

A new left-back could be one of the first ports of call for Manuel Pellegrini this summer, as neither Kolarov or Gael Clichy have really impressed this term and the Serb was poor in this clash and was tied in knots by Adam Johnson.

Samir Nasri – 8

It was a Man of the Match display from the Frenchman, who constantly caused Sunderland problems down the right flank and put City ahead with a great strike.

Fernandinho – 6

Perhaps needs a little longer to fully return to the sharpness shown by the Brazilian before his injury, but as usual the defensive midfielder was solid in front of the back four and provided great cover.

Yaya Toure – 8

It was a game of two halves for the Ivorian, who was average in the first half and then brilliant after half-time, scoring a wonder goal to level things as Toure netted yet another at Wembley.

David Silva – 7

Was shackled somewhat by the north east side in the first half, but as they tired the Spaniard took control and drifted in brilliantly from the flank and provided superb creativity.

Edin Dzeko – 6

Not a brilliant game for the Bosnian, who looked off the pace before the break and the 27-year-old’s passing was generally pretty woeful.

Sergio Aguero – 6

It was the first game back for the South American following injury and it showed, with Aguero struggling at time but did show flashes of creativity.

Substitutions:

Javi Garcia – 6

Came on for Silva to shore things up in midfield and helped snuff out Sunderland’s attacks alongside Fernandinho.

Jesus Navas – 7

A much better showing from the Spain international than has been true of late and the winger netted the third and final goal to seal the victory.
