The Republic of Ireland and Serbia face off in an international friendly match with an eye on UEFA Euro 2016 rather than the 2014 FIFA World Cup as neither side having achieved a position this summer’s major tournament.

The match ought to be a close encounter, with both sides likely third favourites to progress from their qualification group to the Euros.

Serbia are up against Portugal, Denmark, Armenia and Albania, while the Irish face Germany, Poland, Scotland, Georgia and Gibraltar, and each will be keen to demonstrate progress is being made to put pressure on their rivals.

Both teams have some top class players in their ranks.

Ireland will look to Hull City striker Shane Long and Jonathan Walters of Stoke City for goals, with the pair ably supported in midfield by Everton’s Aiden McGeady and James McCarthy, the recently headbutted David Meyler and Wes Hoolahan.

Serbia boast Branislav Ivanovic and Nemanja Matic of Chelsea and Aleksandar Kolarov of Manchester City, as well as star players from the continent in AS Roma forward Adem Ljajic and Dusan Basta of Udinese.
