The Best Englishmen In The Premier League 13/14 With Liverpool And Manchester United Stars Prominent

The finest English players from the top tier.

As the World Cup draws ever closer it’s time for England manager Roy Hodgson to start thinking about who is going to be in his 23-man squad.

So as a handy guide, here are the 10 best Englishmen from the Premier League this season, with statistics courtesy of WhoScored.

10. James Tomkins – West Ham United, 7.26

With the Hammers doing so well defensively this term it shouldn’t really be a surprise to see someone from their back line in the list and maybe Hodgson should be taking a closer look at Tomkins.

9. Adam Lallana – Southampton, 7.28

The Saints captain has risen to prominence as the club have regained their top flight status in a rapid time and now the attacking midfielder looks almost certain to be heading to Brazil in the summer.

8. Phil Jagielka – Everton, 7.29

It’s been perhaps the centre-back’s best campaign since moving to Goodison Park and the Toffees skipper is also an established member of the Three Lions starting XI as well.

7. Raheem Sterling – Liverpool, 7.30

The winger openly admitted to becoming a little overwhelmed at Anfield last year, but under the guidance of manager Brendan Rodgers the 19-year-old is now showing brilliant form and has six league goals.

6. Gareth Barry – Everton, 7.36

The Manchester City loanee looked to be a shadow of his former self at the end of last term, but on Merseyside Barry has re-found what made the midfielder great at Aston Villa and many are calling for the 33-year-old to go to the World Cup.

5. Gary Cahill – Chelsea, 7.38

Jose Mourinho’s return as manager at Stamford Bridge has done wonders for Cahill, who alongside captain John Terry makes up one half of the most successful central defensive partnership in the country.

4. Curtis Davies – Hull City, 7.40

Perhaps something of a shock entry now as Davies is nowhere near being considered for international duty and yet at the KC Stadium the defender has been largely to thank for Hull’s successful return to the English top tier.

3. Wayne Rooney – Manchester United, 7.59

Due to a poor campaign this list isn’t dominated by Red Devils players as it once might have been, but with 10 league goals and nine assists Rooney is proving to be one of the few positives in the new David Moyes era.

2. Daniel Sturridge – Liverpool, 7.61

Arguably the most clinical finisher in the division this year as in just 20 appearances the striker has an incredible 18 league goals and has formed a brilliant partnership with club team-mate Luis Suarez.

1. Steven Gerrard – Liverpool, 7.73

Yet leading the way in what will be pleasing news for Hodgson is the national and Reds captain, with Gerrard having played one of his best seasons to date despite now being 33-years-old and could do with one final hurrah with the national team this summer.
