Barcelona will bid to keep the pressure on Real Madrid when they travel to take on Real Valladolid later this afternoon.

Tata Martino’s side are currently just one point behind the leaders and with the Real not playing until Sunday they have a chance to go two points clear, laying down a marker for their rivals.

To do that the club will have to improve on recent form, having won just four of their last eight games.

They face a Valladolid side sitting third from bottom, three points from safety and with just one win in their last 10 games.

The clash with Valladolid will be the first time Barcelona take to the field since it was revealed that Captain Carlos Puyol is set to leave the club at the end of the season. The 35 year old revealed midweek that he has reached an agreement with the club over the final two years of his deal and is set to move to pastures new.

The influential Spanish international has been an integral part of the first team since 1999 and his departure will leave at big gap at the back for Barcelona, a fact acknowledged by Coach Tata Martino.

“Puyol is one of those players you can’t replace. He has left his mark at this club,” Martino told reporters at a press conference.

“I haven’t discussed transfers with the club. What is clear is that, now Puyol leaves, we’ll need to sign a centre back.”

The club already have Marc Bartra at the club and the 23 year old helped ease the departure of Puyol by revealing that he had signed a new contract, tying him to the club until 2017. The former Spanish Youth International is line to start this weekend.

Brazilian pair Dani Alves and Neymar returned from International duty ready for the action. The pair trained on Friday ahead of the game and will in the squad.

Former Manchester United defender Gerard Piqué has recovered from a minor thigh injury and is also named for the away trip but there was no place for Alex Song, Jordi Alba, Isaac Cuenca, Ibrahim Afellay or Jonathan Dos Santos. José Manuel Pinto is also left out as he continues to work on recovery from a back injury.

Real Valladolid meanwhile are sweating on the fitness of Jeffren ahead of the game. The former Barcelona star is struggling with a hamstring injury.
