GK: David de Gea

The Spain international has been in rock-solid form all campaign long for the Red Devils, one of the few players who can actually claim such a thing, although the youngster will be hoping for a quiet afternoon in goal at the Theatre of Dreams on Sunday.

RB: Rafael

Despite initially not seeming to trust the Brazilian full back, new United head coach David Moyes has in recent weeks appeared to grow more confident of the youngster, who as a result looks set to keep his place in the starting lineup despite taking a knock to his ankle at West Brom last week.

CB: Chris Smalling

Despite captain Nemanja Vidic, Rio Ferdinand and Jonny Evans all now back fit and raring to go, Moyes looks set to stick with the two young England internationals at the heart of his back four for the visit of Liverpool after they helped record a clean sheet at the Hawthorns last weekend.

CB: Phil Jones

And the same applies to Jones, who could have been moved forward into a holding midfield position by the Scot on Sunday to help provide even more protection for his back line, but who looks like remaining in central defence.

LB: Patrice Evra

The experienced France international will be needed to marshal the home team’s back four against the Reds, while at the same time providing an attacking threat with his marauding runs down the United left flank.

LM: Adnan Januzaj

This is a fixture that the Red Devils need to go all out to win and so expect the home side to line up with an attacking formation, which means the young Belgium-born wide man being given the nod to start on the left wing this weekend.

CM: Michel Carrick

The experienced England international may have been off colour for much of this campaign, part of that which is down to injury, but with the holding midfielder having now recovered from his Achilles’ tendon problem, he will have a key role to play putting out fires in front of his side’s back four on Sunday.

CM: Marouane Fellaini

The big-haired Belgium international has only just returned from a wrist injury that was badly hampering his campaign, although the midfielder had an encouraging display against West Brom at the Hawthorns last Saturday and as a result, looks set to keep his place in the centre of the park for the visit of the Reds.

RM: Juan Mata

This would be the perfect opportunity for the diminutive Spain international to make himself a hero at Old Trafford following his club-record £37.1m transfer to the Theatre of Dreams from Chelsea in the recent January transfer window.

ST: Wayne Rooney

The England international has been one of United’s best, if not the best, players so far in this campaign and the arrival of the Merseysiders in town always seems to get the Scouser playing his very best.

ST: Robin van Persie

The Dutchman may have appeared disinterested at times in the north west this season, but the 30-year-old always turns up for the big games, while he also has a great scoring record against Liverpool.
