Manchester United are considering a move for Schalke striker Klaas-Jan Huntelaar this summer as they prepare to offer unhappy striker Robin Van Persie back to Arsenal for a fraction of what they paid for him back in 2012.

Van Persie has let his frustrations known to the defending champions, and is now in line for a return to his former club after Arsene Wenger came calling and CaughtOffside understands that David Moyes is looking to replace him with prolific compatriot Huntelaar.

United have been linked with a plethora or top class international strikers so far this season, including Diego Costa and Edinson Cavani, but seemingly aware of his past failures in the transfer market Moyes is keen to bring in a player that he believes won’t be chased by the rest of Europe’s elite this summer.

However, with Schalke currently sat in third place in the Bundesliga, they are on course to qualify for next season’s Champions League, something that United look increasingly likely to miss out on and the 30-year-old may take some convincing to forego his participation in the tournament.

Like Van Persie, Huntelaar has had a number of serious injuries to contend with over recent years, but has been in prolific form for the German side ever since joining from AC Milan back in 2010 by notching up 88 goals in 130 appearances in all competitions. He has continued this form into the current campaign by bagging 11 goals in 12 games, and Moyes will be hoping that he will want one last crack at the Premier League before he gets to old.

But there is one ray of hope in Moyes’ pursuit of the hunter, and that will be that he will have just a year remaining on his current deal with Schalke by the time the season comes to a close in May. He last penned an extension back in 2012, which would see him up to the summer of 2015 and with talks of a new deal yet to take place United can hope to make a concrete move if they can come to an agreement.
