The Five Realistic Signings That Could Make Liverpool Great Again

Anfield side well on the road to success but here are a few targets who could help in the club’s pursuit to a return to their glory days.

Arguably Liverpool are well on course to usher in a new era of genuine success with Brendan Rodgers having made great strides over the past 18 months, indeed the Anfield side are perhaps three signings short of being equipped to mount title assaults on multiple fronts.

There are areas of the Liverpool squad that Rodgers could well do with strengthening and a lack of real depth in some areas is a potential pitfall should injuries and poor form take their collective toll.

Yevhen Konoplyanka (Dnipro)

Brendan Rodgers would do well to re-ignite his interest in Ukrainian winger Yevhen Konoplyanka, who so nearly joined the Merseyside club in the January transfer window.

The signs are that the 24 year old was indeed keen to make the move and an addition of another wide attacking option, especially given Raheem Sterling’s age and Victor Moses’s inability to make an impact during his loan spell this season.

Konoplyanka provides natural width, invention and a very real goal threat that would help ease the burden on Luis Suarez and Daniel Sturridge.

Qualification for the Champions League would effectively give Liverpool a big edge over potential suitors Tottenham.

Luke Shaw (Southampton)

The left-back berth has proven something of an issue this term, chiefly due to the fact that first choice starter Jose Enrique has been out injured for a lengthy period.

Aly Cissokho hasn’t done enough to warrant a permanent move to Anfield and John Flanagan is arguably better suited to the right-back slot.

A move for Southampton’s Luke Shaw would be a wise one to consider and there is no reason to suggest Liverpool couldn’t fight the likes of Chelsea and Man United for the England international.

Brendan Rodgers is well known for his willingness to trust to youth and Liverpool are a side well and truly on the up and Shaw could well be swayed by the chance of being part of the club’s long term plans.

Alex Song

Lucas Leiva has suffered with a fair few injury concerns and Brendan Rodgers doesn’t have a great many central midfield options at present so a move for Barcelona star Alex Song would be a wise one to consider.

The 26 year old has struggled to retain a foothold in the Nou Camp starting eleven but make no mistake, the Cameroon international is a quality player and is far more than ‘just’ an enforcer.

It’s worth remembering that in his final season at Arsenal Song finished as one of the Premier League’s leading assist makers.

A move for Song wouldn’t cost the earth and the La Liga side are certainly open to selling the former Gunners star.

Joel Matip

Brendan Rodgers has had a few problems at the back during portions of this season with Daniel Agger not being at his best and Kolo Toure lurching from one glaring error to another. Martin Skrtel has been fairly dependable but at 29 years of age his best years are perhaps behind him.

22 year old Cameroon internatioanl Matip has been a mainstay at the heart of the Schalke defence for the past couple of seasons, having switched from a defensive midfield role to a centre-back with incredible ease.

Matip is being targeted by both Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund but Brendan Rodgers would do well to register his interest in the rock solid defender.

Alvaro Morata

Clearly in a strike pairing of Luis Suarez and Daniel Sturridge Liverpool have one of the most deadly attacks in European football but they do not possess a great deal in the way of quality back-up options.

Fabio Borini has done well at Sunderland but showed nothing in his first season at Anfield to suggest he was anything more than average. Iago Aspas has looked woeful out of his depth and could well be set to leave Liverpool in the summer.

This is where Real Madrid youngster Alvaro Morata could come in. The Spanish Under 21 international is said to be frustrated at a lack of action at the Bernabeu and a move, perhaps initially a loan spell, at Liverpool could certainly tempt the youngster.

When called upon Morata has shown he is capable of impressing at the highest level but currently Carlo Ancelotti is opting to use a mouthwatering front three of Cristiano Ronaldo, Karim Benzema and Gareth Bale and even fellow starlet Jese Rodriguez is now ahead of the locally born forward.

A move for Morata would adhere to Liverpool’s youthful transfer policy and may well suit all concerned.
