David de Gea: 8/10

The Spaniard didn’t put a foot wrong on the night, commanding his area well and keeping United in the tie with a terrific double save at 1-0. If Olympiacos had scored, the hosts would have required four.

Rafael: 7/10

A decent performance from the Brazilian, who ensured that most of the Greeks’ best moves came down United’s left flank.

Patrice Evra: 6/10

The veteran will miss the first leg of the quarter final after picking up a silly second half booking and he was slow tracking back twice in the first half, which led to promising openings. Expect Moyes to upgrade in the summer.

Phil Jones: 7/10

Jones was beaten for pace too easily by Arsenal loanee Joel Campbell on more than one occasion in the first half but he was much improved after the break and won some crucial headers as the visitors piled on the pressure.

Rio Ferdinand: 7/10

An improved performance from the veteran, who was dreadful in the first leg but proved tonight he still has a part to play in the run-in. He is no longer the powerful, graceful defender of a few years ago, however.

Michael Carrick: 6/10

Carrick’s used the ball well and linked up with the hugely impressive Giggs. But Olympiacos were still able to breeze past him too easily on occasion. United need to sign a world class enforcer this summer.

Ryan Giggs: 9/10

The 40-year-old rolled back the years, with a sublime performance at CM. The Welshman’s vision and technique were crucial to the first two goals and he didn’t stop running. This is what United have missed this season.

Antonio Valencia: 8/10

The Ecuadorian winger epitomised United’s spirit, playing on with one eye bruised shut after an early collision. His pace troubled the Greeks but his final ball was awry too many times.

Wayne Rooney: 8/10

The England man was back to his bustling best, linking midfield and attack, and running at Olympiacos at will. He set up Van Persie for the second goal.

Danny Welbeck: 7/10

His clever runs stretched Olympiacos and he won the free kick for Van Persie’s hat-trick. A lively performance.

Robin van Persie: 9/10

The Dutchman’s first Champions League hat-trick could hardly have come in a more important tie. His lethal finishing may just have saved David Moyes’ job. Hopefully he’ll be fit for the weekend after being stretched off late on.

SUBS:

Darren Fletcher (Welbeck ’81): 7/10

The Scot was industrious and calm in possession. He set up Rooney for a curling half-chance the forward sent wide.

Marouane Fellaini (Van Persie ’90): 7/10

Won a corner and a free kick in the last five, which were extremely useful as United ran down the clock.
